Ship name "printed" on the side

Recommended Posts

Looking around KSP's reddit (/r/KerbalSpaceProgram) I found this:

It's a custom flag used to print the word "Atlantis" on the side of the ship. This could be a stock feature that puts the save name you use at VAB/SPH on the ship. It could also be tweaked to put any other name, the same way flags can be turned on or off.

Configurable letter decals on any part? Yes please. It would just be a simple tweakable to add (barring actually implementing the overlay texture on the part itself.) Just needs a single new option "Set Decal Text", empty string should totally disable the decal.

Once upon a time the editor had a whole (empty) tab devoted to decals, which was later removed. I think something along these lines was planned at one point and quietly dropped.

I like the idea, ideally it would not be tied to vessel name but allow you to enter text for it in the tweakable menu for each part that supports it. That way you could have different text in different places on the vessel.

Although I too like the idea, there's a small problem I see - which particular part of the vessel should have this name painted on? You don't propose the ship's name be on each part, no? Then the obvious choice is a root part but that too sometimes can be not an option since sometimes the root part is not what it is expected. Other than specifically asking the player to designate the part that should have its name on I don't know how to implement that. Perhaps it should be some 'invisible' part that is attached to wherever the player seems fit.

Basically, only the command pods. Or put in another way, any part that carries a flag.

Also:

I would like to see this as tweakable right next to flag button.

The idea of a decal that you "stick" to any part is very nice. But I see that a bit difficult to implement - what would happen if you tried attaching it to an octagonal strut, for example?

We can put flag on any part?

Not at the moment. But the same goes for flags, if we could put flags anywhere, how would they look on "non-friendly" parts, like a structural part, or the tiny ones?

I say flags on crew-able parts and text on wings and fuel tanks.
