  1. 1. Interested in a second screen support?

    • That sound great, I've been looking for something like that
    • I don't care/don't have two screens
    • Sounds good, but it will hardly have enough support to make it interesting

Hello guys,

One of the things I realize while playing KSP is how cluttered my UI gets. With all the flight data, TAC Monitor, IR controls...Let's says sometimes I don't even see my own ship :D

I am considering doing a "mod" that should allow to move reasonable amount of that info out of the main game windows. It will be based on the amazing KRPC from djungelorm. The main program will later load "modules" that will be draw in the second screen (this will be something in Windows.Forms or GTK#, not unity). With enough dev effort, many things can be done, both to the game and to addons. Not only request data, but also control the game/addons

The problem is that it requires quite some work (many already done, many still pending). In my mind, the kind of things I would love to be able to do are:

- Control my RT antennas

- Have a copy of TAC Life Monitor

- Be able to use TAC FB in that screen

- Set the KAC alarms

Wil you people be interested in something like that?

I would be more interested in a map view on the second screen. That way I don't have to switch between flight and map. ^^

If you could can display something like a RasterPropMonitor screen (or several of them) go for it! That would be really useful.

The one thing that I would absolutely love from a multi-monitor setup would be having map view permanently on a second display.

The examples you quote would be nice to have, but not so essential for me personally. I don't mean to dissuade you however, I could see many in the community wanting these things.

Apparently the Map view is the ideal output. Sadly, I doubt that one is feasible without using another instance of the game (like what basic.syntax and Kogster pointed out) or with direct Squad support.

Perhaps so, in which case I rather hope it's something Squad have considered.

Nonetheless, I do think some of the ideas you have proposed have merit. Two replies do not really represent the preferences of the community as a whole. :) I'd give it a bit more time before drawing any firm conclusions.

The map doesn't need to look like the one in the game. A display similiar to RPM is more than enough. That one only shows the planet as a circle and your vessels orbit as an ellipse. More importantly it shows all the orbit data.

You don't have to come up with fancy graphics!

Edit:

Here are some examples if you don't know RPM. If you can show some of that data on the second screen it would be amazing!

left: orbit display

middle: navball

upper right: vessel data

lower right: resources/fuel

far right: altitude log

white circle: ground

grey circle: atmosphere

turquoise ellipse: current (sub)orbit

I will look into what RPM is doing. Yet, I still see many problems:

- Pulling data out of the game via RPC calls has a performance penalty, and even an schematic map requires a fair amount of data (KRPC is prepared to pull real time information, we are talking about quite a lot of data)

- My knowledge of physics is extremely limited, but way better than my experience making anything graphical on a computer

The good news is that I can continue working with the project and once is "working", I can seek help for the map thing (but don't get too excited, if it's possible, it will be a 2D projection (maybe 2x2D projections, to have one for the planes) of your current orbit with a target reference
