I know holograms require a medium to be beamed onto in order to work, What if a machine generated virtual particles and deflected light off those?

No, you cannot do that. Without getting into details, it'd be a violation of conservation of momentum. You need an actual medium with an actual physical mass to scatter the light from.

Virtual particles are a very poor name. They're not particles. They're non-localized disturbances in quantum fields.

So are regular particles. :rolleyes:

That's not what makes virtual particles virtual.
