Can parts be rendered in game and not show in the VAB/SPH

I was sure I posted this earlier but it seems to have vanished so here goes again.

Is it possible to add part mods, build craft/space stations/bases in sandbox then move said constructs into a brand new career game in various orbits and locations then alter the mod such that only stock parts show in the VAB/SPH but the modded parts are still rendered in game.

So my kerbals can go off in their stock craft and discover these whacky looking advanced alien craft lurking in the kerbol system

If it's simple to add and remove parts from the VAB/SPH I'd like to have them recover said craft and gain the ability to build new ones, ie reverse engineer the tech as it were.

You can have parts in game that are not available in the VAB/SPH with this CFG parameter:

TechRequired = Unresearcheable

It is not readily swappable though, you'd have to edit the config file each time, and you couldn't do it from within the game without some sort of plugin.

Thanks Randazzo, that doesn't sound too bad I can roleplay that the time it takes me to exit the game alter the config and reload with the new tech unlocked is the time the kerbals have spent disassembling and researching the alien craft!
