Well, they still haven't announced fixing the random crash issue. It's driving me insane. Is this what win32 feels like?

Do they really need to add "working on fixing bugs and crashes" into every annoucement? It's kind of a given. While they may have brought in Roverdude and others to make cool new features it doesn't mean the core Squad team isn't continuing to work on core parts of KSP, like unity 5 port, bug fixes etc.

Rosetta / Philea is the most recent example and whole remote landing process remained terrifying for those in control and the landing didn't exactly go smoothly.

The same is true for many other probes we've launched, Mars for example has had 13 "landings" . . . . 3 of which smashed into the surface at high speed, 1 burned up during reentry and 2 landed but never came back online. An ~50% success rate. Success has generally improved over time, partly due to better technology but mainly due to the data gained and lessons learned from the failures.

We've a long way to go before probes are intelligent enough to pull of flawless high speed maneuvers in complete radio silence in an only partially defined environment.

Even the maneuvers that are currently pre-programmed are adjusted and tweaked by mission control right up to the last possible second!

Doesn't change my point. Any distant maneuver by definition takes place out of contact, and is therefore programmed. Point in X direction, and thrust for 0.1 seconds.

Viking had a radar altimeter. Once reentry was initiated, it was on its own.

In KSP terms, making the maneuver node is the "remote control," and having the probe do itself makes sense to me. Again, I'd like parts to allow for proximity retro burns, or something else to account for the devs refusing to give stock players the data they would require for even slight communications delays :)
