Underground installations?

Is it possible to have underground bases? Just asking by the way =">

Technically speaking, there is no underground. The planet is hollow. It may be possible to "simulate" underground by extending the surface, but that would likely be something only Squad could do. You are talking about some rather in-depth (no pun intended) modification of the planet.

well, there was a mod that added an ICBM Silo with KK mod

Yeah but that was a static model like the Kerbal Space Center. I think he is more interested in being able to excavate out terrain and build the base under the surface. Problem is KSP is mot designed for it...the camera, how the planets are built...and more all get in the way of it.

I suppose if you forgo building it in the VAB and instead launch a module that, when on the surface, creates a fake under ground base that is outside the Kerbin "play space" (skybox) build an underground set piece where you can attach modules inside a physics free area (if it is built into the terrain why would you need physics) then you could achieve it. Certainly with in the capabilities of the engine. And you would not need to worry about getting the camera under the skin of the planet also.

I guess the closest thing that has been done is a mod that can create procedural star systems that can be warped to. But could still be very messy.

Sounds like it'll take a long time to do if they decide to do it :P

These got me thinking, why not have different underground base containers that have pre-filled parts already designed in the VAB/SPH :) when you pop/assemble them on the ground on another planet or moon, it creates a hatch so you can enter it. :D only IVA camera mode is enabled. Maybe some other parts are sticking out of the ground for future connections :)

Thanks for your comments by the way. :)

Actually, it wasnt, you could open a port for the missile/rocket to launch

What SyberSmoke meant by "static model" was that the model does not dynamically change/dig/alter/deform the shape/contour/profile of the terrain/land/ground. It has nothing to do with whether the ICBM port opens or not.

i found it, this one

Yep, that's just clever disguising of a static model. Essentially that model exists like a buried fuel tank at a gas station. The author made the whole model and then just sunk it into the hollowed planet and hid the fact the planet was hollow with walls.

If I understand the OP, he wants to drive around in an underground base like you can at KSC. That is more than just a static model, that requires editing of Kerbin's terrain. No mods do that, as far as I know.

Think the ICBM Launch Silo mod is the best approach for adding "underground" installations :D
