Spend Science to Upgrade Parts!

Recommended Posts

I'm going to do a generic "Blinding Flash of the Obvious" opening here. :)

There's too much science to get, and not enough to spend it on.

That said, how about this: an addition to the R&D complex that allows you to spend science to upgrade individual parts? You could upgrade engines for higher thrust, or better fuel efficiency, or wider gimbal range; upgrade the mobile processing lab for higher data storage capacity or faster research; upgrade solar panels and RTG's for higher electrical output. And so on and so forth.

I like that the specs of parts don't change. Makes sharing craft files and troubleshooting the craft of others much, much simpler.

But you can change the stats in the craft file of certain parts(thrust, fuel percentage) to over 100%. Maybe you could only upgrade the engine or part on one craft, which would also make people want to reuse the same rocket like in rl.

Seconding this sentiment. Its also why I stand against kerbal XP making engines better or some other non-sense.

This is pretty much a complete non-issue. A large number of people play with mods, and they manage to get support troubleshooting, and the changes would be small for the sake of balance.

A choice of options for an upgrade path system, combined with precursors required more than the stock tree (a wider tree, with more attention to precursors required for a given new node) would make research paths more critical. If the current system were not so awful, then it would not be so attractive.
