What is a "transfer" in deltaV maps?

Recommended Posts

I understand what a hoffman transfer is, but when looking at deltaV maps I'm a little confused on what they define as a "transfer" or "transfer orbit". Is this detlaV require to circularize after capture?

For example:

There is a node labelled "Kerbin Escape/Capture" which I would assume is the point where you leave Kerbin SOI, and therefore would then be in an orbit around the sun(Kerbol). There is also a node labelled Kerbin-Kerbol Transfer. What is the "Kerbin-Kerbol Transfer"?

The "Kerbin Escape/Capture" node corresponds to an orbit that only just breaks Kerbin's SOI and is then in an orbit round the Sun essentially the same as Kerbin's orbit round the Sun.

A node like "Kerbin-Duna Transfer" corresponds to an orbit round the Sun with periapsis level with Kerbin's orbit and apoapsis level with Duna's orbit. If your timing is right that will get you a Duna encounter. Similarly for all the others. "Kerbin-Kerbol Transfer" is an orbit with apoapsis level with Kerbin's orbit and periapsis really close to the Sun.

Note that this map, like most maps, assumes you are doing your burns close to the planet or moon in question. Ie when departing Kerbin you would do a single burn from Low Kerbin Orbit to get into your transfer orbit round the Sun.

I recommend THIS nifty little app for your droid phone. It is invaluable (especially if you don´t have two monitors or place to stick printed delta-v map on paper, like me). Although its little bit outdated (Kerbin LKO), the worst thing that it can lead you to is surplus of fuel, which is not always a bad thing when things go wrong (and you have disabled quickload and revert flight, again, like me :D ).

Thanks, I understand now.
