^ Man, getting forced into retirement for not causing a nuclear war. That stinks. They were "embarrassed" at their mistake, but how much more embarrassed do you think they would've been if he had launched the missiles?

And in the case of Petrov, while I don't deny that he is a hero, I'd imagine at least one of his superiors would have reached the same conclusion he did. Their job was to anticipate all possible scenarios for such a conflict. Arkhipov's case was different, as there was no chain of command for him to report to. His decision would've been final, and I doubt US forces would have hesitated to respond once a carrier group went up in a ball of fire.
