I'm ashamed I didn't know about this man.

Vasili Arkhipov was a Soviet Submariner whose actions at the Cuban Missile Crisis likely prevented a nuclear war.

And in the case of Petrov, while I don't deny that he is a hero, I'd imagine at least one of his superiors would have reached the same conclusion he did. Their job was to anticipate all possible scenarios for such a conflict. Arkhipov's case was different, as there was no chain of command for him to report to. His decision would've been final, and I doubt US forces would have hesitated to respond once a carrier group went up in a ball of fire.
