What's this thing near the KSC?

Just spotted something in the Map view that I've never seen before in the mountains west of the KSC.

Flew over it in a jet and saw nothing on the ground that corresponds to it. It's among the most jagged and not-land-on-able part of the terrain in that area.

Anyone else seen this before? Is it worth sending a rover out there, or is it just a bug of some odd sort?

Can't see diddly-squat in that picture. I had to download it and open it with Gimp, then color curve adjustment revealed it. There is a monolith (anomaly) in the mountains west of KSC, but that's not its location - it's further west and south of there. That's more than likely a blip of terrain/elevation detail... evident elsewhere in that same image.

Sorry about the pic, I did actually GIMP it to increase the contrast but I guess the colour depth is pretty low in the map screen on the dark side of Kerbin at any rate.

It looks weird on my screen, it's really as if it's supposed to indicate some kind of deliberate surface feature. I shall send Val to investigate. Perhaps something will appear if I get within 2.5km of it?

Disappointment :(

I landed nearby in daylight (when the anomaly is not visible) and warped in Map view until the anomaly became visible. It seems to blend in with the way sunlight lingers on the peaks of the mountains in the late evening. A few hours later the next day the sunlight engulfed the anomaly again. I suspect the location coincides with a very steep (perhaps literally vertical) surface in the terrain which might cause some lighting code to flip it's state in the Map view, nothing appears visible in flight though.

False alarm I guess. *shrug*

Here's my attempt to lighten and compare with a Kerbin map (also first time using GIMP, I changed the Hue setting to get the colors to "pop" a bit more): (EDIT: guess it was nothing anyway. Oh well!)

Hmm as far as I can tell, it does coincide pretty closely with the steepest part of the mountains there. I remember there being a lot of very steep cliffs and some (almost) flat pits in that area. Could just be texture/lighting issues.

But how cool would it be if it were an incredibly well-hidden easter egg? I mean I really (REALLY) doubt it is, but that'd be cool anyway

An old movie from the 1980's, damn it's been so long, I'm going to watch it again.

Haven't watched it since the 80s ! In France, its title was mysteriously translated to "Miracle sur la 8ème Rue", so "Miracle on 8th Street". :|

EDIT : personal mystery solved. It was in reference to Miracle on 34th Street.

Also, Dave's Puppy :)
