The Alternis Tylo Landing Challenge

Recommended Posts

The Introduction

In my mod, Alternis Kerbol: Rekerjiggered, the Kerbol system is rearranged. The original characteristics were designed by NovaSilisko in the original Alternis Kerbol mod for KSP 0.23. Tylo has long been the super prize of any Alternis Space Programs willing to accept the challenge.

Tylo is an insanely massive so-called "Superkerbin" planet. With four gees of surface gravity and a very thin atmosphere, aerospace engineers fear it. Its atmosphere is so thin that it won't slow you down, but it is so thick that it will burn you up on re-entry. And to make matters worse, the atmosphere is made out of a material that is very difficult to see with the naked eye. Some kerbals have even suggested that landing on Tylo is impossible, let alone returning. The Kerbal Astronomical Society claims to give three golden stars to the first kerbal to make the trip.

Tylo:

Surface Gravity: 4.001 gees

Radius: 1103000 meters

Atmosphere: Approx. 1/2 of Kerbin's

After the Alterkerb Spacefleet Command decided that it was time to land a kerbal on SuperTylo (also known as Stumbos), the Space Simulation Division decided to test it out with the HyperEditâ„¢ Simulation Hypercomputer.

They found a distressing result. So distressing that it appears it may indeed be impossible to land on HyperTylo. The precious science to be gained will never touch Kerbal hands!

It's time to prove those pessimists wrong!

The Challenge

Download and install the Kopernicus mod Alternis Kerbol Rekerjiggered

Easy: Land a space probe onto the surface of Tylo with 1/10 re-entry heating settings. (1 gold star)

Normal Mode: Send a space probe to the surface of Tylo, intact, with at least one Mystery Goo container, a transmitter, and a power source. (2 gold stars)

Hard Mode: Send a Kerbal to the surface of Tylo, plant a flag and collect a surface sample, then return to Kerbin. (3 gold stars)

Super Mode: Impress me. (Stars > 3)

Possible Methods

1: Use a LOT of heatshields and engines offset to thrust past them.

2: Slow down all the way before hitting the atmosphere.

3: Use some kind of exploit like the Kraken Drive or the Ladder Drive.

4: ???

Winners

These brave pioneering Kerbanauts are the first since KSP v0.23 to get a Tylo-scented scratch-and-sniff golden star sticker*.

Those who completed hard mode won't get just one, but three gold stars!

List will go here!

Good Luck!
