Spontaneously Exploding Ships

So I'm orbiting Jool with my probe, enjoying the view and dealing with the fact that I didn't know that solar panels are _almost_ useless that far out with 1.0. And my ship just explodes out of nowhere! The mission log said it overheated?

But no engines are running. Its not like I was close to the sun. What the heck?

Anyone know what it up? It actually seems repeatable!

It overheated because Jool is a very big gas planet and you got too close without any heat protection. Jool's atmosphere is up too 200km, and it is very dense and therefore generates a lot of heat when you pass through it at high speeds.

I guess List of places and biomes in KSP in wrong? Why didn't my warp drop to 1 when I hit the atmosphere?

the "get out of warp" feature is somewhat flawed, it really decelerates, and you probably have noticed blowing by points where you said to stop the warp. this is especially true @ periapse
