Could someone help identify what this kit is used for?

Hello all,

I received this kit from a friend who was hoping I could sell it for him.

I have no clue what it is and am having a difficult time tracking it down online. I think because it is older and no longer in production.

I believe it is called an Econo-Press P/N 0026-001. Made and or distributed by Thermo Spectra-Tech.

I have inserted some images.

If anyone can tell me what it is, what it is used for, and a rough price I could sell this particular one for online, I would be greatly appreciative!

Thanks!

It's a tool used to make sample pellets of solids for testing using spectrographic analysis equipment. I'm tempted to ask - where did he steal it from. lol

It's made by these guys... you might find pricing on their site under 'Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry', the 'Sample Preparation' section.

Its an test cell for an infrared spectrometer.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrared_spectroscopy#Absorption_bands

Most organic compunds including many polymers do not absorb in the vusible or near UV range, exceptions are aromatically stabilized, heterocyclic compounds and aducts of metals and organic compounds. There is often absorption below 215 nm that is non informative. The best spectral range is in the IR part of the spectrum, essentially wobble spectrum. Carbon-oxygen bonds and C-n bonds of various types absorb in this range. The KBr is transparent in this range. Crush your sample in a KBr powder and compress it into a disk which can be read between KBr disk. Process has been replaced by FITR, but dried solid translucent samples must stll be used. Opacity is a problem but in the near IR, because light scattering is the inverse forth power of the wavelength.

Samples have to be dried, because the IR spectrum of water can interfere with the identification of hydroxyl groups.

Hmm... your friend sent you something he has no idea of what it does and wants you to sell it rather than himself selling. This seems... odd, and not in a good way.

Why exactly does he has this device?

Ricky might be jogging right along when questions like that are asked :D

Dont jump to conclusions, under the right circumstances the powers that be will often tell a willing taker to make it disappear. For example when you have a 1000/day contractor renovating space in the AM and you have a lab full of equipment in the previou PM. You would be surprised at the value of things I have pulled out of recycling.

alibaba.com is the vendor of choice, lots of third world countries have hungry scientist willing to buy.

I doubt scientists will buy this kit. The guys who need it get it directly from the manufacturer or specialized vendors who - and that's the important part - guarantee quality and functionality of what they sell.

The average consumer usually can't buy stuff like that. I mean who has a spectrometer at home?

Ive seen less likely equipment on alibaba, the press alone is worth prolly 100 USD. Yes, tryst me, their are scientist out their that have zero budget for new equipment, all they need is a infrared light source and KBr prism and the can have a spectrometer.

  • 2 weeks later...

thanks for answer!

Haha I didn't steal this! I definitely would assume the same though if I were in your shoes.

Just to clear things up so you guys don't think you're helping a thief -

My friend works for a office furniture company that does a lot of clear outs. this recent company was a science lab and they are pretty much going bankrupt. They throw away practically everything because it would cost more to store it and they literally have no money. I told my friend how I have an eBay business and he told me about all the stuff they were coming across. Since he is lazy and not to Internet savvy we made a deal he would grab anything that looks good that they were throwing out and I would sell it.

Hope you guys can sleep at night now.

i see this so many times, thats how you end up with cesium sources being carried around in the pockets of nine year old kids. In any case, you will probably spend more money shipping it to its buyer than the price of the kit. I hate to see these things wasted, good luck.

Thank you to those who helped me out.

To everyone who accused me of stealing this I don't blame you.

But for the record, I did not.

A friend of mine works for an office furniture removal company that is often hired to do clear outs of rented spaces for companies who are down sizing or going out of business.

this company is going out of business and they were some research lab. He told me about all the stuff they were throwing out and I told him I have an eBay business. anything he thought was valuable he grabs and I sell it for him and we split profits.

This stuff would otherwise end up in a landfill even though most of it is still good.

Hope this clears everything up for the sceptics.

Also, I'm new to new to the forum because up until my encounter with this thing I have not required a science forum membership.

Thanks everyone!

You would be surprised.

Ha ! Have fun with your puny mass spectrometer while i go examining samples with my electronic microscope in my basement. I'll get a cyclotron installed in my bedroom next week, it'll be easier to get the radioisotopes i need without having to walk down to the nuclear plant in my backyard.

Fair game :) It is good to see that things might be put to good use instead of throwing things away. You earn some money and some guy on the internet gets a good deal. Just be careful of what you pick up. Sometimes harmful substances or equipment can be abandoned, despite regulations to prevent this. Laws stating companies have an obligation to clean up this and that are useless when that company goes bust.

Do not let that frighten you too much though, it is just something to keep in mind.

Don't laugh too hard. You have a contractor setting around waiting for an inst to move a JOEL 100 kva EM, youbwould be surprised how fast they try to find a taker.
