Video making and such

So, throughout the night I reinstalled KSP and a myriad of mods, and due largely to the Ship Effects mod and the ASET MK1-2 pod, I've been running IVA only missions and the experience has just been incredible. First time I came in for reentry was just mindblowing. And naturally because I'm playing KSP again, I really want to start up my ETS playthrough again. However, because of just how incredibly awesome IVA is for me now, I really want to do it on video this time. Which would not only be a lot more interesting, but would also feed my ever hungry ego by way of more views

However, I'm not quite sure what to use for this purpose, especially given the fact that whatever I use would have be free. I'm imagining that'll be a stretch to have a good recorder that can capture sound alongside relatively high quality video (My only experience with screen recorders is with Bandicam and from what I remember, the results were, functional at best) thats not going to require a purchase, though I'd be surprised if there wasn't a decent video editor that was free.

So whats recommended here for this situation?

For now, I'm going to give Shadowplay a try just cause it seems more straightforward to deal with.

Now is just something to edit videos with. So I can try to smooth out transitions (like cutting out the unavoidable third person if I was doing all IVA, for instance) and do things like adding intros and what not.

Mentioned many times in these forums... AV Linux.

I'm not really sure "second operating system" qualifies as a simple or straightforward solution :D

Effective maybe, but probably not a good place for someone to start.

I'd recommend starting with shadowplay and/or OBS as the recorder, and simply use windows movie maker as the editor. WMM isn't fancy, and if you get into making LP's or anything it's not going to be an acceptable long term option, but it's certainly capable enough of getting the job done quickly and effectively long enough for you to decide if this is something you want to keep doing, and if so, then look at a better editor, probably a paid program for windows, or a free option like AV Linux. The recorders listed can be a jumping stone too for people who decide this is something they want to do enough of, but OBS is certainly capable enough that many relatively high profile content creators are able to use it as their primary program (and it does make your life much simpler if you both record and stream). I can't say I know of anyone who has done the same with shadowplay, mostly because there are a lot more games it doesn't get along with than for OBS (there is an equivalent for AMD as well, whose name escapes me. It's part of the Raptr application, and for games it works with, it actually does seem to work very well.

In a nutshell, start as simple as you can, and find out if this is something you want to keep doing, and if so, exactly how you want to do it, and then turn your attention to finding programs that might better address your needs.

...

It's not so much that it's a second operating system... in fact, it's not very alien from Windows at all. It's more-so about the fact of the wealth of free resources; audio, image, and video editing utilities. Add to that, the entire package booted from a live disk is optimized for low-latency. You should at least try it. ;)
