Hey Bill! Hold my beer! - Building jump challenge

Recommended Posts

One late night at KSC, Jeb saw the shiny new 35 ton rover that the engineering team just put together, and did the logical thing and took it for a joyride. After about 5 minutes Jeb decided to make things really interesting before the janitorial staff noticed the rover was missing. How you ask? With a wager of whether or not he could clear the Admin Building. To everyone's surprise (most notably the guys in the Admin Building) Bill now owes Jeb 20 funds.

The Challenge: Make a rover and jump over some structure at KSC

The rules:

  • No Hyperediting gravity, or using any mods that modify gravity's effect on the rover.
  • No cheats.
  • No kraken drives.
  • Wings are allowed, but not as the primary means of staying in the air. This means no flying cars or gliders.
  • Engines are not allowed. The only exception is the KF APU because a butterfly fart produces more thrust than that thing does.
  • Using Infernal Robotics to make a great big pogo stick also isn't allowed. This is simply because AFAIK IR motors don't have speed limits.
  • No reaction wheels, reaction control systems, or control surfaces. Once the rover leaves the ground, it is at the mercy of physics. ADDED: Using Control surfaces as wings is allowed as long as the pitch, yaw, and roll is disabled.
  • At least images are required. However if you can, I wouldn't mind a video of it.

Rules footnotes:

  • The crawlerway and runway don't count. So far the only actual (read: destructible) building I've manage to jump is the Admin Building. If you try hard enough you might be able to clear the spherical tank by the launchpad.
  • I'm not gonna disallow artificial ramps, but if its noticeably more than half the height of the target building it will disqualify. Take care.

Scoring:

  • 100 points for every ton.
  • 100 points for every meter over 67 (since that's ground level)
  • 10 points for every kerbal aboard the rover.
  • 200 points for jumping over the Admin Helipad.
  • 1000 points for jumping over any building that isn't the admin building. You really earned it in this case.

Leaderboard:

This will remain empty until at least one other person submits something.

I like the "Evil Knievel"-style fashion of the challenge here, but this would be impossible to do with stock parts, because the stock rover wheels are just too slow to get the rover off the ground.

Which basically boils the challenge down to "How many powerful rover wheels from $insert_mod_here can you slap on your rover and hurtle it over a hill?"

It would be a lot more fun and less mod-demanding if you could allow stock jet engines in the challenge, perhaps Wheesleys only. Or maybe the tiny SRBs and rockets that would never have enough TWR to get a rover in the air, like the Sepatron or the Ant.

Not entirely stock parts, but the wheels are.

And it still adheres to the rules, granted I made a minor change to the rules, but stock wheels are capable of clearing the Admin building.

EDIT: I used a separator to detach the rear set of wheels after leaving the ramp. It probably wasn't clear in the three images and I acknowledge this.

EDIT2: My issue with engines (especially jets) is that there is nothing to stop someone making a VTOL with wheels, or just rocket-hopping with separatrons.

not a decoupler, but a separator.

Exact same vehicles, similar situations, now with rockets:

The Heavy rover lands mere feet from the Astronaut Complex. The stock wheels rover didn't need the separator despite nearly twice the difference between the ramp and the Administration.

The engines were exactly horizontal and cut on take-off.

IMHO its not a challenge if it isn't a challenge.
