Rover wheel problems

Recommended Posts

I'm having two major problems with rovers:

- Brakes don't work at all (which seems to maybe be a known issue that requires stock bug fix mod? Still the case in 1.0.4?)

- As soon as I launch/test drive, the thing takes off at full speed regardless of control input. Does it in flight, too - just spins the wheels frantically, using up all the power. The only way to get it to stop is to disable the motors.

Am I doing something wrong, or are we still stuck with game-stopping bugs in 1.0.4?

This does not sound normal. To clarify things, if this is a rover on top of a rocket, it will spin forward or backwards through controlling the rocket. :) (Only sharing to make sure, you likely know this, so no offense of course) Brakes can be a little slow sometimes, just wondering if the "not working" is that delay you're referring to or they just simply don't work at all.

If that's not the case and your ground rovers are crazy, I would make sure that your KSP settings from the main menu are set correctly. The key bindings, specifically, along with action groups in the VAB / SPH. Here's a few important questions that came to mind:

  1. It shouldn't cause this, but do you have mods on? Make sure that there's no leftover files or incompatible addons. It sounds cliché but it this is good to know.
  2. Does your keyboard get stuck often? As in, does it tend to press one key and hold it, even if you have already let go of it? This is a possible hardware issue if so. That would explain going full speed at the start unless you mean the craft physically just launches itself.
  3. Have you done a complete reinstall yet? Assuming most people use Steam for KSP, it keeps your saves to my knowledge if you "Delete Local Files" from the Library. Just in case, copy and save those.
  4. Finally, do you still continue to have the same problem if you make a new save in the game, just say, Creative for example, and make a new craft? Just a debugging idea. Someone will likely have a better answer but let's see if that was any help.

Wish you luck in finding the fix.

I've had some buggy behaviour with rovers accelerating in an unintended way. Things to try:

Alt-x to reset any acceleration or steering trim.

Make sure the wheels are oriented correctly, so that the steering inputs rotate them around the vertical axis, and not so they're angled to stick out the front/back of the rover.

Switch to another craft and back.

Quicksave/quickload.

Return to KSC and then go back to the rover thru the Tracking Centre.

Also, using any crafts made almost entirely of 'physicsless' parts can cause many strange issues.

Also, having a Kerb clipping with any part of the structure can also cause ghost forces.

Hope you nail it down, I've usually been able to return my rover to a drivable state after some tinkering.

Lastly, quicksave often!

Also, if you have a flight stick with throttle control, and that throttle control is assigned to Rovers, make sure it is centered (not fully back like a plane, that is reverse)

Aha! That was it! It kept backing off the runway, and running for the hills. :P

I'm pretty sure the brakes thing is the bug addressed by the stock bugfix wheel fix - unfortunately that seems to attract a Kraken when I install it.

yep, that will happen :D

I don't know which one you have, but I have the Thrustmaster HOTAS. On this one there is a soft lock. You can feel the physical throttle stop at 50% and you have to push just a bit harder to get past it.

I remember reading before I bought it how Flight Sim enthusiasts hated that, but I love it for Rovers and Elite: Dangerous (which behaves similar to rovers in KSP). Before I bought it I borrowed and old Saitek Cyborg Evo from my Dad and his throttle was very hard to find the stop position.

Ah, well that does make it hard. If you get into building planes, the stick is very nice. Flying with a keyboard is annoying and you almost must use SAS, which is kinda cheaty to me but the only way. Having the analog control makes planes a lot easier to fly on your own.
