VAB Merge Function

So I am trying to build an orbital craft with a lander, and I want to use the Merge function in the VAB so I can build them both separately, however whenever I select merge and the lander shows up there is no way to attach it to anything, there are no green attachment nodes, it is just transparent and useless. What am I doing wrong? Why won't it work?

Merge function is broken. Use the root gizmo to make your attachment point on the lander the root and the save it as a subassembly.
