How did the obsession with "snacks" become a part of the KSP lore?

Yea I first recall it cropping up in discussions about possible life support mechanics and the biology of the kerbals.  Jokingly questioning how they are able to survive indefinitely in space.

I would still be okay with a simplistic stock life support mechanic just using 'snacks' instead of food/water/oxygen.
