Where do I go from here?

Recommended Posts

I'm playing on Science and would like to keep on that path. I've just picked up some nice science points and now have 90+ to spend. Here's where I am on the tech tree:

But do I then have enough to get to Mun and back? Or should I repeat the science experiments? I look forward to your thoughts.

Your next mission could by a Munar fly-by. Remember you can EVA and remove the data from experiments so you can discard them before reentry. If you're new to EVA in space, quicksave before you start! It's a little like docking in that it seems difficult to start with, but once you get the hang of it you can do it every time.

As for nodes, I'd either go for the solar panels or wait until you have enough points for the heavy rocketry at the top of the next column. Either way, each large crater on the Mun offers a load more science points.

A simple rule of the thumb for when you don't know what to get next:

- Research the node that gives you a new science experiment first.

- When no such node is available, research the shortest path to the next node that has a science experiment.

Obviously, there will be many times in your gameplay when you will want a specific part in a specific node to do something for fun or progress, and in that case, go right for it. That rule is just for when you have no plan for what to buy next.

Strange, i NEVER do it like that. I always look for the node that will make me go farther (better engine, docking, etc). This way, i will use the same science experiment, but on a new celestial body.

Well, technically you can go everywhere on just LV-T30's, including Moho landing and return stuff. Though admittedly struts would help in building the relevant vehicle :P

In practical application, You need to upgrade launchpad and VAB to make it happen, and funds are limited at the start, so researching things that let you downsize (Terrier) is a major advantage.

Still, right around that point is where you basically stop needing new rocket parts from a pure "must get there" perspective. Unless you like to roleplay that your Kerbals need large habitats or the like.

If/When you have the Pegasus I Mobility Enhancer you can build a ladder to where your experiments are stored. Otherwise you will usually have to let go of the craft to get close enough to remove data. It's a little tricky to start with, but useful as removing the data from an experiment means it can be used again (although some, like the Goo, need to be reset by a scientist).

Although further away, Minmus is actually easier to land on due to the very low gravity. Plus you don't need much ∆v to leave its SOI and return home.

In theory, yes, you are right.

In practice... This would make a great challenge ! Who wants to try ?
