Hmm... I think it's some sort of down-counting in the end. Talk about counting in binaries, the binary being switching between odd and even numbers.

We must begin to stage abduction of average citizen and put them onto the test like this so that they are prepared when the real thing comes!

I would have guessed something with a XOR gate.

EDIT: Just tried a solution with XOR on paper and it also works. But it's much more complicated than the solution given in the video.
