They feed the main engines and run out at the same time the SRBs do, to within a second or so.

When the SRBs drop away, it's full of fuel

I'll post some pics of the ascent, but I forgot, as I nearly always do, to take them on the final test run. I nearly always do that.

There's time enough, after separation, to use the dregs of fuel in the carrier to boost it up to a high enough orbit so there's time to circularise the shuttle's orbit, switch back to the carrier while it's in the upper atmosphere and land it.
