Just looking at the link, I thought that it would go to the Onion. Why do people believe this stuff?

I'd love to say it's because people are really, really stupid, but while that is probably a really big part of it, our brains are wired to see familiar patterns.

People who aren't stupid, though, can see the pattern and recognize that it's a coincidence, and not really a face, a squirrel, or in this case, a miniature Martian polar bear.

Either

A. "See! It's gone! It must have woken up and walked away!"

B. "NASA just photoshopped the images. They don't want us to know the truth."

The truth, of course, is that there are some crazy people out there.
