Here's another way to keep your Kerbal safe whilst in a command seat...

This little craft is capable of a landing on Duna and then a single stage return all the way to Kerbin's surface.

PS - You can access the command seat to board and dismount from the little gap beneath the seat.

That's really cute! That girder idea I think was used to protect a kerbal before, but not like that. Does it use parachutes for landing?

Yes, but depending on the landing altitude on Duna you might need a little burst of engine just before landing. Remembering to repack the 'chutes before using them again at Kerbin.
