"Texture Replacer For Dummies" - Does This Exist?

I would like to give my Kerbals specialty-specific suits, so I can quickly and easily grab a Scientist (for instance) when that's what I need. A quick search indicated that Texture Replacer is the way to go. I have now gotten and installed the mod in the same way I've installed the couple other mods I've picked up in the past. That much appears to have succeeded, as I now have the appropriate new icon on the UI.

But I have no idea what to do next. Clicking the icon pops up a window with my various crewmembers' names and 'generic' options for the various specialties, with what I assume are the default 'textures' for male/female orange/grey-suit faces, EVA, IVA suits as appropriate. But nothing appears to be selectable. After attempting to follow the Green Skull instructions (which are a year and a half old, and reference a many-versions-obsolete release of TR), I mostly learned two things:

1) Apparently I have to do some sort of manual manipulation of some kind of config file(s) in order to get new textures ... installed? activated? (...or something)

2) Being a professional aerospace engineer in real life does not allow me to evade the fact that KSP's learning "curve" is more like a learning "wall". I just get slammed up against it over different things than most of the rest of the user base. (Okay, so in fact I already knew this. But this is yet another example.)

So. Is there some sort of REALLY BASIC REMEDIAL set of instructions out there to get me started? I am aware of the Green Skull instructions which are advertised as the "simpler" (!!) instructions. But everything in the Green Skull instructions after the "put the Texture Replacer folder into GameData" may as well have been written in Swahili. I need something for people who are confused and intimidated even by THOSE. Something for the sort of person who throws scare quotes around the word 'texture' because I know full well that I'm just blindly repeating a nonsense-word that seems to be linked to the thing I want, but have no idea what I'm actually saying.

I have no plans to CREATE textures. I don't need to know how they work. What I want is a set of step-by-step instructions that will let me (for instance) give my Engineers the stereotyped Red Shirt, where by "step-by-step" I mean "so simple and clear and COMPLETE that they could be used unmodified by a trained monkey or NASA astronaut".

Does anything like that exist? Or am I doomed to spending several weeks of time (which I could otherwise spend PLAYING the game) on giving myself a remedial education on texture maps and config files? (Or, more likely, throwing my hands up in frustration while continuing to be impotently jealous of people with screenshots featuring actual individualized Kerbals...)

Have you downloaded a uniform texture pack and installed it? You'll need some alternatives to choose away from the default suit texture. Once you have a suit pack installed, You can use texture replacer to assign a set suit to each of your current Kerbals, and also set a default suit for each new profession and tourists.

Gregrox has a colored EVA/IVA suit pack that he recently released. There are several other suit packs that are out there, as well. You can search the mod sites for them.

Install one of them, then from the Space Center screen, access Texture Replacer and go to town.

Okay, that would be the "...for dummies" step that I was missing. I'll go look around and see what I can find. I assume the long list of texture packs in the top post of the main Texture Replacer release thread would be a good place to start...?

You shouldn't need to worry about versions with these, as they are only graphics which go into a folder (usually called suits) under Texture Replacer.

If you're running 32 Bit, once you figure out the handful of suits you want to keep, you can delete the rest of them from the Texture Replacer folder to save yourself some memory.

Well would you look at that! You're right! I do have a colored suit pack.

GregroxMun's and veryinky's suits downloaded, Gregrox's installed and tested. All seems to work okay.

Next question: I see there's a couple files in the "Extras" subfolder in the TR download. Those are nothing like the various suit files (.cfg vs .png file types for starters). So what are those and what am I supposed to do with them? (TR appears to work okay without them, as one might expect given that they're in the "Extras" folder.)
