Duna and Eve lander probes

Recommended Posts

I'll soon send my first lander probes to Eve and Duna. They will be cheap tiny things, and I have two questions:

1. Duna's atmosphere is thin from what I know, do I need heat shields? Something like this is what I have in mind for my first Duna lander:

2. Since its atmosphere is rather dense, will one 1.5m heat shield be enough for Eve?

I'm specifically asking for 1.5 and its somewhat reworked atmosphere. Any other little tips and tricks would be welcome, for example what pe should I aim at?

I play with FAR by the way, but FAR aerodynamics have changed as well with 1.5. Edited by ROXunreal

1: You do not need a heatshield unless you're going from space to ground instantaneously. If you decide to orbit first though, you do not need one.
2: Put 2 heatshields with a decoupler under the other to make sure you have enough, and aim for a 65k periapsis, from my experience that worked fine.

You probably won't need an heat shield on Duna, if your probe is well designed for reentry, but you need engines to slow down, in 1.0.5 with FAR the Duna'a atom is really thin.
On Eve you absolutely need a heat shield and engines too, for slow down before reentry and to land safely, also with a lot of parachutes, due to the high gravity.
