If you happen to be within a couple km of an easter egg in career, you get a "world's first" bonus for finding it.
If you get one of these notifications, it's a hint to take a look around.
Surface samples don't seem to register as a unique biome, tho'.

When I got the notification for landing on the island aerodrome, I figured it would be the same for other easter eggs and found out to be true for some I already knew.

You ought to put a spoiler tag there, I bet many people here don't know about them.

*Sob* I flew all the way to the pyramids - in atmosphere - and they didn't even notice

The monolith on Minimus triggers a world first. I over flew it at about 7,000 meters and saw the first come up. Never saw the monolith myself as it was shrouded in darkness.
