Once I accepted a contract to take an asteroid out of the solar system, then I realized it asked for a class D asteroid...

1 nerva, 1 isru, 1 drill, ore tank, LF tank.

As it gets drilled down to empty it can get pretty light.

Just think of it as a giant fuel tank(possibly even more weight efficient than the ones you can use in the VAB

In other news.....

I should do a proper write up but I don't have time this week.  I did have a "Bring back Ore" contract.  I sent a miner to Minmus.  I mined ore. I transferred it to my lander.  I sent the lander back to Kerbal and after two aero captures landed it safely in the water.

And didn't get credit.  I'm not sure if I clicked on the "recover vessel" too fast or if the water meant I wasn't stable but whatever.

Fix?  Put a pod on the landing pad full of ore.  Shoot it up.  Fire parachutes, let it land.  BOOM.  Successfully landed 600 Units of Ore and left it stable.

Take THAT fine print!

I have a mining stations on Minmus and Kerbin(with UKS logistics to let me automatically transfer that fuel to ships in the SOI for a fuel cost), so 'recover ore from Minmus' type missions just require a quick visit to those two ships for completion.

If I need to put it in Kerbin orbit, I'll just switch to one of my self-fueling kerbin-system cruise ships instead.

The contract only checks that each step is completed, not that they are in the correct order or the same ship.  (I have actually gotten the 'recover on Kerbin' part marked complete before the 'mine ore from Minmus' part)

I expect this is to avoid scenarios where you fail to satisfy the contract due to lifting multiple loads of ore to an orbital base or you perform docking/undocking/staging actions that change your ship ID.
