Transporting Cargo that has wheels

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to make a cargo plane to take a base/hitchiker unit and (personal) land speed record attempt vehicle to the North pole. Whist this quite an interesting challenge due to dimension restrictions of the cargo and narrow wheel track / axle width allowance of the cargo ramp, I haven't actually reached the north pole yet as my cargo keeps rolling around in the cargo bay and exploding :( Does anyone know how to stop this? Sometimes the g-forces of flying tip the base over backwards (see the picture- it is quite top heavy as the wheels can't go on the side it due to the narrow ramp!), sometimes it just spontaneously combusts!

I've put the brakes on (duh!)
Fully shut the cargo roof and rear ramp (duh!)
I've added landing legs to the front of the hitchiker unit in addition to the ones shown in the picture below. They stick out at 45 degrees in an attempt to stop the bases falling over in the cargo bay, and works half the time.
I'm out of ideas now!

Here are pictures of what I'm making. How can I keep my cargo still in flight? Also, my cargo disappears if I quick load- is there any way around this at all?

What I have found is its best to build the craft inside a cargo bay then save it as a separate file.
The reason for this is it forces you to build it inside the limited space of the MK3 cargo bay.

Also you need to make sure the rover is near perfectly balanced and when docking its docked to the bottom center of the craft.

Here is my example.
The PGC-120 Starlifter.

It currently can hold two rovers I made (infantry fighting vehicles)
When I load the IFVs onto the cargo plane it has a small docking port right in the middle of the it so it docks to one of two docking ports on the bottom of the inside of the cargo bay.

Currently the only issue I have is that if the wheel pops it can't be repared but for the most part it works

Its mostly trial and error, long and tedious but one you get it right you should get a great feeling of success.

If you want I can send you a copy of the IFV and the PGC-120 for reverse engineering

Just after I wrote the post I realised that docking ports would keep the cargo attached to the cargo hold AND allow for quick saves as it would all be one ship! Just need to find a way to get a docking port on a low-slung aerodynamic high speed car!

Good idea to build the cargo inside the ship first to make sure it fits and the docking ports are at the right heights.

I could (and have) shot stuff to the North Pole Using rockets but I'm after the challenge of making a cargo plane :)

Well, I find that the Mk3 cargo bay and ramp are utterly useless for carrying a rover of any useful size and cross-country ability.  This is because the Mk3 parts are very narrow and have all this wasted space vertically.  Wasted because a rover that tall, while limited to the width that can drive in and out, will tip over if turned at any speed, or if it attempts to traverse any significant cross-slope.

So if you want to build a plane to carry a genuinely useful, long-distance, high-speed, jump-the-moguls rover, don't use the Mk3 parts.  Build the rover, then either just attach jettisonable wings and tail to it, or encase it in a fairing.
