Post your Magic Boulder pictures here.

This is an admirable goal.  I wish you luck.  While I have no pics myself, you might want to watch this classic Scott Manley video.  He circles the Magic Boulder at very short range so you can get excellent looks at all parts of it.

I have seen that before, but I forgot about all of the angles.  Thank you!

If you made it an asteroid you could intentionally make it glitchy/explody.  You could put in a random integer that recalculates every so often.  If it comes up 1, then the magic boulder moves 1m in a random direction at about the speed of light.  The small but extremely quick motion will either blow things up or eject them from the Kerbol system.  That way people could live out their magical bouldery fantasies, but at the cost of many ships/kerbals.

The issue is the textures.  I'm thinking about going the non-Kopernicus route.  I might have to create a model, and write a plugin to put it into an orbit etc.  That would make it easier to then make it Krakeney.

But if you make it an asteroid, then it's a "ship" that can be targeted and you'd have all the HUD and instrumentation of KSP (*cough* such as it is) at your disposal to rendezvous with it.  Plus, you could move it.  The REAL Magic Boulder was on rails so could not be moved, did not show up on the map, and could not be targeted.  You had to know where to look, then visually acquire it against the background and maneuver to it entirely by eye.  Then not quite touch it.  If you want to recreate the Magic Boulder, you need to hit as many of those traits as possible.

So. rails means you need Kopernicus and make it a planet thing.  But keeping it off the map, preventing targeting, etc., I dunno.  Perhaps the code of the original is buried in some dark corner of KSP and could be cribbed.

To get the code would likely require decompilation of it.  I could try to see about finding the script by just trying random references.  Thank the lord for autocomplete.

But if we can't push the magic boulder into Kerbol then the Kraken can never be born into its corporeal form :(.

He's already in corporeal form, on Bop.

That is not dead that can eternal lie

And in strange aeons even Death may die.

AMEN ::D

Why was Magic Boulder removed, putting aside the weird kraken effects? Or was that the exact reason why it was removed? And if that is the case, why was it even added to begin with? Was a debugging tool of sorts for the development of KSP?

Perhaps they wanted it to be a fun secret, but too many people found out about it, so they just removed it?

It may as well have been an easter egg, as many of the other easter eggs in the game are fun secrets as well. I see no reason why they would remove Magic Boulder for that reason exactly.

There was nothing bugged about the Magic Boulder.  It always functioned exactly as its inscrutible and unknown Builders intended.  I mean, look what happened when Dave Bowman touched the Big Monolith in orbit around Jupiter.  Do not taunt the Big Monolith, do not taunt the Magic Boulder.  Simple as that.

As to what happened to the Magic Boulder and why, there are many theories, some of which involve conspiracies.  Which one you believe depends on how many layers of tinfoil you've got in your hat :D.  Some say the Magic Boulder completed its mission in the Kerbol system and returned to wherever it came from or continued its journey to its next destination.. Some say that there never was a Magic Boulder per se, it was just swamp gas and a weather balloon.  Some say The Government grappled it and took it to a secret lab to investigate and reverse-engineer it.  Some say that the Magic Boulder was just a PR stunt that was part of the faked Duna expedition that never really happened, and that including a Magic Boulder in the press releases is the strongest evidence that the whole Duna mission was a hoax.  Some say that the Magic Boulder actually exists in a parallel universe and was only briefly visible in this universe due to some transient conjunction of various quantum state functions.

Those are the most popular and widely believed theories.  But there's a small group of heretics who point out that Dune and Ike received major facelifts right at the time the Magic Boulder disappeared, and conclude that because the Magic Boulder was technically part of Ike, the modification of Ike forgot about the Magic Boulder and erased it by accident.  However, because people these days have utterly lost their ability to think via the Scientific Method, these rationalists are dismissed by the masses in the same way as those who advocate MoND over Dark Matter.

Nova Silisko added a number of Easter Eggs throughout the Kerbol system while he was a developer with Squad. However, he was the only one to do so, and having since left KSP to work on his own game, the Easter Eggs have been largely abandoned, and some have been rendered inaccessible (the Curiosity mastcam, the singing hill, etc.)
