A BLU-108 submunition from a CBU-97 Sensor-fused weapon. Basically part of an anti-armor cluster bomb on electronic steroids.

The cluster casing contains ten of the above submunitions which are dispersed some distance above the ground, after release.

Each submunition then deploys a parachute (naturally). Juuuuuuuuust before impact it fires retro-rocket which halts the descent and also lofts the projectile back upwards, it also imparts a rapid spin.

At some point the swingy-outpy parts are released and the "hockey puck" munitions (4 to a single BLU-108) are flung outwards in a cross-shape pattern.

Each puck is now flying outwards from its submunition. It is also spinning on a canted axis so that the imaging IR and Laser sensors scan a cone-shaped area.

On detecting a target-shaped (programmable) image, the munition fires an explosively-formed projectile into its upper surface.

Its ugly but its so friggen clever I love it
