Hello!

Just really curious about what people's opinions are on this topic: 1.0.5 moved the Whiplash jet engine from the tier 6 (300 science) tier to the tier 7 (550 science+bajillions of funds for a research facility upgrade) tier. I'm just wondering if most people approve of this decision, or if you'd prefer it to be moved back to tier 6. And hey, polls are fun. :)

Pros as i see it for moving it back to tier 6:

-The Whiplash is based on the sr-71 balckbird's engine, and made its first test flight before we even got anything to orbit (1958), so it's not exactly super high tech

-the massively increased funds/science barrier to unlock it kind of discourages people from making jet spaceplanes (sure, you can make them with the panther, but then you can't really do anything with them)

Cons as i see it for moving it back to tier 6:

-we already have the panther, and can make mildly effective pure-rocket sstos pretty early on

-sstos should be quite incapable and hard-to-make anyways

-the devs did it, and its their game, and thus they probably know best and we shouldn't bother them about it even if we don't like it

so, yeah. If you could vote, it would be great :)

See, I think it's in tier 8 at the moment, so perhaps we first need a poll on whether starter-tech is tier 0 or tier 1.

To the question though - move them to as low a tech-level as possible; clearly everything must be done to make aeroplanes fly to and through space as easily and early as possible.  No doubt those of us who can do better than "mildly effective" pure-rocket SSTOs will continue to build them instead.
