Land a jet on the mun safely and return.

Recommended Posts

hey fellow ksp fans,

I was wondering if anyone landed a jet on the surface on the mun ? since i´ve been unable to find some picture or video of it.

Thus i decided i would give it a go.

Here is the result :

Ps sorry for 480p, i have HD version if you´re interested

(Also with a jet, I consider everything as long as it is able to take off,land horizontal.)

EDIT: HD take off;

Not bad :P . I also considered landing in such way but, i wanted to set her down on her wheels. And that seems to be difficult, I already exploded Many ships while trying that.

Yes indeed, as RedDwarfIV pointed out above, my Archer spaceplane can do this challenge in a single stage. I made the successful proving flight yesterday.

It is a pleasure to fly it on takeoff and in space, with beautiful handling characterstics under thrust. Sadly it turns ugly in a glide. If you have no fuel for a powered landing, you are almost certain to crash.

Indeed, I found to have the same problems in non-powered landings.

It\'s easy to build a spaceplane that glides nicely and can land safely, but you need either a balanced design with a tail, or a low weight of engines. Landing vertically on the Mun, you can\'t have either of those.

My most promising vehicle so far. Technically a two-stage, since it drops two atmospheric engines. Carries 12 passengers and a Mechjeb. Cabin can carry two jumpseaters. Undercarriage includes a Kart, which could allow for non-fuel-expending Munar travel, and the forward takeoff gear is jettisoned to allow for this. It can successfully reach 10Km, though I haven\'t tested past this yet due to stage order discrepancies.

My Gotha flying-wing design can get to the moon, land, roll around a bit as an impromptu rover, then right itself and return to Kerbin.

It\'s also capable of Minmus missions, as can be seen here.

Here\'s Gotha itself.

Guess I\'m going to need more rockets and ramjets, then, and lose the decouplers. And throw in some SAS modules. Current version has absolutely no SAS other than the cockpit, which makes keeping it stable a massive challenge. I\'ll start work on it tomorrow and get back to you.
