Boarding Mk1 Cockpit while in water caused an explosion?

What would cause this? I safely landed my shuttle with a pilot and four tourists, got the pilot to jump out and take a surface sample. attempted to board while swimming and the whole thing just exploded, killing the pilot and all but two of the passengers. 

That was a big contract too ;-(

Happened a second time with a different ship.  fortunatly in sandbox.  Will have to do some testing and see if its repeatable.

Landing Mk1 Cockpit (with attached ship) in water, safely on chutes. Getting out to get water sample (refreshing taste of Kerbin water!), pressing B to board, everything explodes, everybody dead. Happened after resetting, too.

This has just happened to me in mission mode but I didnt realise everyone had died and hit recover and now I've failed my contract and lost a bunch of rep... is there any way to go back to before my current mission in mission mode to undo this?

If you had a quicksave, you could load back to that, or if you had a normal save a small time before that. 

Kerbals are really expensive, and rep is importnat (Sometimes). I'd say if you can't load back, just use the debug menu and give yourself your funds, rep, etc back.
