Do I need to start a new game to add more mods?

Recommended Posts

Quick question  here...

So I'm about 140 days (in-game) into my save. I just realized that there's a mod that adds cities or something to Kerbin. I'm interested in downloading and installing it. But is it safe? Will it screw up my save game? Would I have to start a new game? Thanks in advance :D

Depends on the mods.

Installing, for example, RSS on an existing save will probably mess everything up, but you should be fine with part mods.

Best thing to do is backup your saves and try.

Do you think adding some cities would screw anything up?

Also, I feel like such a noob for asking this... but how do I reply to people without quoting them? lol would I just type in the "Answer this question" box?

I don't think adding cities would mess your thing up. But I'm not sure what mod they come from exactly: if they are from EVE you should have no problem, if they come from another mod, I don't know.

And to reply, you can just write in the "Answser this question" box, and write @UndyingWar (with whoever you are talking to) in your message for the user to recieve a notification when you reply.

@UndyingWarIf you are installing a mod that drastically alters orbits or composition of planets (RSS, Toy Solar System, New Horizons, etc), then you'd want to start a new game. Almost everything else should be fine. Even complicated things like RemoteTech, RealFuels, RealHeat, RealChutes, etc should not cause a problem, but do realize that if you have active flights, some mods may significantly alter properties of a ship (such as suddenly loosing contact with an unmanned probe with RT, or burning up on reentry with RealHeat).

As Gaarst said, it's generally good practice to backup your save and try. If something does go catastrophic, you can always remove the mod and restore the backup. It's actually a good idea to make regular backups of your persistence.sfs file anyway. You never know when something strange will happen, and it's very disheartening when you've been working on a save for weeks and suddenly loose it all to something stupid.
