Recent meteor shower?

Hm. Yea I think that's slag as well. But how could it have gotten there? Most slag is transported via rail car ( around here at least we find the stuff all the time around tracks ). How deeply was it imbedded into the ground? Damage to the concrete?

Could've just been kids throwing crap into his yard. Unless it appears as if it hit the ground at terminal velocity.

How to identify meteorites.

Hey Slash.  There are some tests you can do at home before taking it to ISU.

Glad to see you're not a Squawkeye, being that close to Iowa city.

Go clones.

Aethon,

Actually, I am a Hawkeyes fan. But ISU has the best astrophysics department in the region (one of the best in the country).

The more I look at the characteristics of "meteorites vs. meteor-wrongs", The more I'm convinced it cannot be a meteorite. It passes the magnet test and scratch test, but it has surface pinholes and meteorites aren't supposed to have those.

Thanks,
-Slashy

Usually the meteoritics guys are in geology. Not many rock-lickers in astrophysics :) (not a slight, every geologist I have ever known licks a rock within seconds of picking it up).

At what job do you work, OP? Are there potential sources of this rock near you? If it's industrial slag like people say, it had to come from somewhere. I want to construct a background of this thing.

People actually do that? I've never done that, and never heard of people doing it.

Actually, I admit I did that once. Tasted like rust and table salt.

Huh. Cool.

Aww.  Well I won't hold it against you.  You seem like a great guy otherwise. :D.  I actually took several astronomy classes at Iowa state years ago.

An interesting video on how large meteorites are found.
