Is Pol still buged?

Recommended Posts

I have a bunch of stuff at Pol at the moment. No noticable problem (apart from the general problem with all smallish moons, where the map view suggests you're high above the terrain but in fact you ain't.

As far as I know there has not been any fixes on planets during several versions. Not in 1.1 too. But in my opinion Pol is worth visiting even with a bug. Especially if you can use surface scatterings. Most landings go without problems except annoyingly slow movements in low gravity and stupid timewarp limits.

Last time I went there (1.0.4) things would occasionally leap off the surface. I think many things will be fixed by 1.1. I don't know if this will be one of them.

Completely forgot about that.

Yes, mining while absent is impossible because the "on rails" surface is apparently about 600m above the "physics" surface. So when you go back to a lander, it'll be in mid-air until the game realises it should be on the surface and plonks it down again (without damage). A nearby flag will not be replaced on the surface, and remain planted in mid-air.

However, I haven't experienced any collision problems : the surface that you can see in the external view does seem to correspond to the solid surface. Again, you mustn't trust map view to tell you whether you're flyig over or through a mountain.

Edit: Please see my later post - there are collision problems in 1.0.5, I was just lucky in avoiding them until now.

Pol has a ridge that runs E-W just south of the equator.  It's usually a bad idea to try to land close to this ridge either N or S of it.  That's where I've often encountered a solid surface collider about 1500m above the visible ground surface, causing the ship to explode in midair.  I have no reason to believe this has been fixed.

Ahh.

So I went looking for it, and found it.

This is me exploding into the invisible terrain:

As you can see from the readouts at the top, KER will at least tell you that there is a problem, since its "Altitude (Terrain)" data corrresponds to the real (bugged) situation and not what is visible on the screen.

Pics of the location for this issue are here: http://imgur.com/a/60fSy

So no, the issue wasn't fixed for 1.0.5 and you should definitely make liberal use of F5 / alt-F5 when landing on Pol...

I approve of your dedication to science.  Have a virtual beer.

Anyway, I've hit the problem in other places.  IIRC, that ridge goes pretty much all around near the equator.  In the last pic in your album, "Looking back along the bugged terrain", you can see there's a sharp kink between the generally flattish terrain and the sudden start of this ridge.  In my experience, anywhere there's such a kink, there's a good chance of hitting the collider well above the ground.  There are a lot of such areas on Pol, so my advice is to land as far from the ridges as possible.
