Steel no longer floats?

In the pass I created a steel structure and expected it to sink hitting the ocean floor and to my surprise it had flotation, recently I just had a steel barge that was built in an earlier version and tried it with this current 1.0.5 Version and to my surprise it sunk like a brick? I love it! but was this actually added to the physics of the game?

Yes, they changed the buoyancy calculations; submersibles are a thing now, too.  Of note is that ore sinks; using different tank sizes in combination allows for a crude but effective stock ballast control.
