[Mod] MechJeb Rendezvous Issues

Recommended Posts

What you're trying to rendezvous with doesn't matter as it's stationary anyway.  I have found some things, though:

Big, long rockets will tend to give Mechjeb trouble.  I don't think it considers the turning capability of rockets in deciding what to do, if your rocket can't be flipped fast enough it's going to overshoot every time.  With such a rocket let Mechjeb do the final orbit-matching burn then cancel the autopilot and fly it manually.

Also, the rendezvous autopilot is too aggressive.  It seems to want to close in something like 100 seconds no matter what the range--this can result in some burns that are far too big for the situation.  Again, I'm not aware of any fix other than doing it manually.

Finally, there seems to be a bug that's not specific to rendezvous:  When dealing with small burns I find the burn vector sometimes gets afraid of the rocket--as soon as the rocket is lined up with the burn vector the vector jumps far around the navball.  The rocket twists to the new location--and the burn vector jumps back.  I have a nasty feeling that perhaps this is due to taking the rocket's velocity from a point other than it's center of mass (say, perhaps the point it's being controlled from) whose velocity changes as it stops turning.  I've stuck my nose into the Mechjeb code but it's going to take a lot more study to digest what's going on.  Originally this only plagued me when flying at sphincter-tightening altitudes (why do Kerbals keep getting stranded in very low orbits??) but recently I've seen it multiple times even high up.
