  1. 1. What control methods do you use in KSP, aside from mouse and keyboard?

    • Console-style controller
    • Joystick or Flight Stick
    • Custom-built control panel
    • Mouse and keyboard, but with alternate key bindings
    • Other (please describe)
  2. 2. How often do you use this control method?

    • All the time
    • In certain situations (atmospheric flight, etc.)
    • Not very often, when I feel like it, etc.
    • Other (please describe)

While I use my custom built controller, I feel the real improvement is the throttle. Keyboard does not give me enough control to put down a lander at less than 2 m/s.

100%. I use my own controller, and the throttle slider is definitely the most game-enhancing part of it.

I use this, but I'm not sure I would recommend it if all you have is KSP.  I play Elite Dangerous and War Thunder too.  However, I don't use it in Space unless I'm driving a rover and then only the throttle and that analog on the back of it.

I used to use something similar (Ye Olde Saitek X-36 Hotas) but I felt it being obnoxiously large and taking up too much desk space since I only used it for manual docking (and catching 'roids), driving rovers and flying the few planes I fly (in KSP that is).

That's why I switched to the X-Box controller.
