Recommended planet mods/part mods for a mostly stock space adventure

Hello!

So I got the game years ago.  Loved it, played it to death on a 9 month deployment on ship while I was in the navy.  Had my big ol'space program going.  Get home, got proper internet, and bam!  Updates updates updates, 9 months of updates!  So many updates that my first space program was obsolete and unplayable.  I was so disheartened that 9 months of work just went poof that I put KSP on my steam shelf and told myself to wait until the game is 100% finished by the devs.  Or that they wont do anymore major updates that obsolete my work.

I think now is that time.

So now I want to pick up the game again.  I've seen all the planets in KSP and I kinda want something new to explore.  A planet pack that compliments the stock KSP Planets.  As I look through the forum though, I see awesome planet packs that the modders haven't updated in years, dont work the new features, and are unusable.  And updated planet packs that are just... boring.  Big boring rock planets are not exactly the funnest things to land on or get science from.

Kerbal Plus for example was something I really was wanting to play, adding comets with comet trails.  Planets with ice volcanos spewing into the sky.  Not your general ball of boring ol'rock.  Interesting things to explore, letting you land on the edge of a ice volcano, or see a giant gas giant in the sky.  That 's awesome.  And it is right in the stock KSP System so you got the familiar faces.

I am really hoping for some recommendations because I am apparently hopeless at finding good planet packs.

That and while stock parts have REALLY improved from when I played KSP back then, there are a few missing things that I feel should be in the game.  

 

Btw, what happened to KerbalSpacePort?

You realize that Squad is literally a week or two away from releasing the biggest update KSP has ever seen, yes?

If a stable version to start a new game is what you are looking for, you'll either have to disable Steam updates for KSP, or wait just a little longer. (And even then, if I was you, I'd disable Steam updates so you can manually decide when you want to update next.)

Squad partnered with Curse as their official mod repository (see the "Get Mods!" link at the top of the forums) and shut down Spaceport.

A community-built mod repository, called SpaceDock, also exists. Many modders also publish downloads on their GitHub project pages nowadays.

You probably want Outer Planets Mod, if you don't mind the fact that all of the new destinations are really far from the sun. While it doesn't have active ice volanoes, it does have some of the most varied and highest quality planet surfaces out there. All planets and moons are inspired by real-life counterparts, but built to fit into the Kerbal universe. Additionally, it benefits from add-ons that other people have made, such as Scatterer configs for the atmospheric bodies, or a functional barycenter for the Pluto/Charon analog. Browse through the huge opening post for information on all that.

As for parts that you feel are missing, can't really make recommendations unless you say which parts you want. In the meanwhile, look for mods that have "stockalike" in their name or description.

Oh.. I didnt realize that.  Heh.  Well I guess I can wait two weeks for them to release that update then.  At least I have all the time in the world now as a Veteran to wait.

And I'll take a look at Outer Planet Mods.  Even though I would've liked to land on the edge of a ice volcano right underneath a gas giant.  Interesting vistas are the best things imo and I seek them out much more happily then I seek out generic biomes with scrience on them.

And I should've explained further.  Just part mods that compliment the stock parts that you feel that the game should have.
