Production chain: Dumb mod idea?

So I was wondering,

Could a mod be created that allows a product(s) chain and a simulated kerbin economy? I've seen and/or used and tested a few mods out there that seemingly do a part of what I asked. What I have in mind is that some basic resource, like ore, would need to be transferred or shipped to a processing plant that would then split that up into several other interim resources. These would then need to be shipped or transferred to another set of processing plants that would create a series of final products to be sold in the kerbin market place.

Market place? Economy? Yes, a simple supply/demand model that could work on a daily/weekly scale.

Note, I'm stopping here because the idea might be plain stupid or impossible. Yup!

Well, at some point you have to ask the question if the resulting game, after being modded in such a way, still has much to do with "Kerbal Space Program"? Economy simulators are a whole own genre of gaming, and they don't really have any commonalities with launching rockets for fun and science.

You can of course use USI Kolonization System to set up a permanent base on another celestial body, have it produce exotic metals and uranium, and ship the stuff back to Kerbin for sale there. It has some (limited steps) production chains, too. But managing resources on Kerbin? I think what you really want to play is something like Big Pharma, Factorio, or even one of the Anno series games. :P

Well this is why you have mods. Most mods won't appeal to most people that's why they are an additional download. If enough people are enthusiastic about the idea (I am one btw :P) and someone feels they have enough time to invest into it, then why not go for it. People play KSP for many things other than just building and launching rockets.

I have some experience in programming and would like to give this ago in the future if someone hasn't already started development. PM/add me Darkonz if you wanna talk some more about your idea :D

I thought this thread was dead a while back. Thanks johnqevil and FireX. Glad to know someone may have picked up on what I en-cryptically suggested.

Streetwind? No!, I want to play KSP. I want to build and design rockets. I want massive deep space mining rockets and stations (<-Orbit or planet side). I want to boldly go and mine stuff only kerbals should. I want to ship that stuff back to kerbin, produce various products and sell them in a simulated market. USI Kolonization System? Heard of it, never tried it. But it sounds reasonably close to what I intended at the time.

Actually, I may have written down a plan for this mod somewhere. I recall trying to think of other 'already' created mods that have a partial functionality I'd need to look at. Oh well.

UKS has a bit of a production chain in it, but nothing like with a simulated market. Would be a really neat thing to attempt imo.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
