Going for a Walk (with a rock)

Recommended Posts

This challenge is to capture an asteroid and take it for a walk. The walk you have to take it on must pass by all the planets. You must take a souvenir screenshot at every planet showing you, your craft, your asteroid and the planet to show your friends when you get home. They will be very impressed and you will be invited to many parties.

Show them just how much you rock!

Rules :

There is a 20 year time limit

No hyperedit or cheat menu cheats (things like thermal/aero data are fine, infinite fuel/electricity is not)

You are not allowed to hollow out your rock to make it lighter, if you use ISRU it must not be from your rock

Mechjeb is allowed as are all no-part mods which do not change physics or change the resource system

stock engines only, procedural parts allowed as are most mods which don`t change physics to make the game easier or contain parts that have unrealistic ISP, weight or other attribute designed to make the game easier.

You must accompany your rock and be in the photograph (screenshot) with your rock, your craft, and the planet and you must get a photograph at every planet. You do not have to orbit the planet but you must get close enough to be able to see the planet clearly.

If you pass the challenge you will get a pass code depending on the type of asteroid you capture (A-E) followed by a number corresponding to what you managed to do.

1 flyby of all the planets

2 1+put your rock in orbit of kerbin

3 2+land rock on Minmus

4 3+no ISRU

5 4+no refuelling at all (this might be impossible)

So someone who captures a D class asteroid, visits all the planets then returns to Kerbin and puts their rock in orbit of Kerbin would get a code of D2, if they then landed it on Minmus they would have a code D3.

If enough people pass there may be badges...

If anyone spots any glaring holes in the rules/scoring or has any suggestions for making the challenge better or more fun please let me know, I`m very open to such things.

This challenge is in honour of a former challenge many moons ago involving getting an asteroid from near Eve to Kerbin. I was never able to do that challenge because there used to be a bug where every time I got close to Eve my nuclear engines would fall off for no reason. I hope I do better this time.

Landing is definitely possible.  Mined out asteroids are op.  Check out this experiment I did when mining was added.

A mined out A asteroid only has the mass of a smallish fuel tank.  I put wings on a mined out asteroid and landed it on the vab helipad.  It looks cool but that mined out mass is so low...

Yeah, not that hard. Someone landed a mined out class E on the VAB helipad and that's hard. Also, @hazard-ish landed an asteroid with an ssto

Please try to stay on topic people, if you want to show off your craft there is the spacecraft exchange, if you want to relate missions there is mission control, if you want to have a discussion not about doing the challenge there is KSP discussion, this forum area is challenges where you ATTEMPT THE CHALLENGE...

EDIT : I have also adjusted the rules so that a hollowed out rock is not allowed.
