Well at least in my space factory design, I place the open end pointing toward earth, you could point the front end at the highest sources, the metal is thicker due to its aerodynamics, some of which would help to deflect some of the cosmic rays.

There is a statement that there are cosmic ray hot spots within the ISS, people tend to stay away from those areas (im guessing).
