Rotating Unattached Parts

Recommended Posts

Before 1.1, unattached parts could still be rotated. This made many things easier, such as attaching things to station hubs or attaching rotated parts to ships. Now, they have to be attached in the original direction before being rotated, which I consider tedious and unnecessary. Can you change this back please, SQUAD?

There was another thread about this recently. I never even knew it to be possible but apparently some people used the gizmo in the past for unattached parts, and this no longer works.

WASD/QE and shift-WASD/QE still works fine in 1.1.

I believe this is the thread you were referring to:

Personally, I think that the new restriction in 1.1 actually makes perfect sense:

(1) Before attaching your part to the vessel, you use the WASDQE method for coarse orientation

(2) After you've placed the part, only then should you be using the rotation gizmo to fine tune your part's orientation

To use an analogy, imagine that the task of placing a part is akin to chopping down a large tree. Method (1) is akin to an axe, while while (2) is akin to a pocket knife. You wouldn't use a pocket knife to cut down a tree, so why would you use a rotation gizmo intended for fine-tuning to orient parts before placement?

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
