Kerbal Space Shuttle missions

Let me set the scene for you, it's 1972 (or Kerbin's nearest equivalent), The Mun landings have been a resounding success and have catapulted KASA to the absolute pinnacle of aerospace prowess. However they were also the most expensive missions ever flown up to that point. and so to rein in KASA's ambitions and their budget The Kerbal States of America's congress drafts a new plan and orientation for the KS Space Program: Use easily maintainable, reusable, multi-mission space craft to perform near-Kerbin experiments and eventually build a permanent outpost in LKO, an heir of sorts to the kerbal Skylab, all to prepare for future missions to Duna and beyond. The Kerbal Space Shuttle Program is born!

Welcome one and all to my series of Space Shuttle replica missions! In this series I will be posting a highly accurate series of missions based on, you guessed it, the Space Shuttle Program. I will be detailing a good variety of period missions based on several time frames, although I might skip some because they are too complex, not interesting enough, or just plain bad taste to replicate (disastrous missions WILL be skipped). So come along for the ride and bear witness to one of (IMHO) the most fascinating Programs NASA ever undertook, all meticulously replicated in KSP!

Please don't keep opening new threads for announcements- plase use one thread and add to it (like my Saturn Shuttle series (link in sig)).

Right thanks, I don't want to be opening a bunch of threads for chapters either, I'll just separate them with post titles. Thanks for the advice, BTW. Your thread gave me a good example.

Part 0: The Pre-Flight tests

Almost five years after program initiation the first Shuttle is completed, an atmospheric test article. A 747 passenger aircraft is also procured and modified to carry and launch said shuttle. It is decided that the new design's atmospheric flight characteristics need to be determined before the first real launch, and thus the Approach and Landing Tests are engineered, in which 747 releases the shuttle a distance from the runway and lets the Shuttle free-fly in for a landing.
Simple right?

Jeb and Bob (veterans of the early 70's Mun landings), decide to brush up on their piloting skills before the tests begin.

Tower: Talon flight you are cleared for takeoff.

Jeb: Time to put this baby through her paces!

After takeoff they decide to give the monolith a flyby.

Bill: Not bad Jeb.

Jeb: Not Bad? I can do better than that!

Jeb: Yee-Haw!

Bill: Woah!

Jeb and Bill: SWEET! Lets do that again!

Tower: Uhh, Guys?

Tower: Okay guys don't you think you're cutting it a tad close there?

Jeb; C'mon, we're just giving you guys a little show, that's all.

Tower: Yeah, well you're also giving us heart trouble, so why don't y'all finish up your flight and come on back in okay?

Jeb: sigh... Alright.

Tower: By the way, you boys ought to like this! You've both been selected for the new program, congrats!

After landing Jeb and Bill reminisce about their mun landing, and talk about this new turn in their careers.

Jeb: Back in the saddle again, huh Bill?

Bill: Yep looks like we'll be going back to space, it's been to long!

Jeb: Yup it has... I wonder where this program will take us next?
