Retracted landing gear collisions?

Recommended Posts

I have been working on some space planes for a few weeks and I was not able to trace down a strange bug until tonight. I wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing it.

My spaceplane is using medium landing gear that is clipped into the craft.

Everything works just fine as long as you overlook the known issues with landing gear not wanting to go straight down the runway.

I can make orbit and dock to my station.

If I save and then reload, or do anything else that makes the craft re-load, it will freak out and different parts will move out of alignment. It doesn't explode or disassemble itself, but some parts move apart from each other and out of alignment. They mostly move back if you start timewarp.

I have tried many things to find what was causing the problem. It looked to me like there was a clipped part that was getting angry.

Sure enough, if you remove the landing gear and launch the craft (hack gravity), all of the issues go away.

So far it seems to be more reproducible in space than on the runway.

It also seems to not happen if the landing gear is left extended and never retracted. This makes me wonder if it's the tires. I know in previous versions of KSP, the tires would collide when you retracted them if they were clipped into something.

Please help me test this and nail down what is going on. There may be more issues with landing gear than just the steering and handling.

Actually sounds like a part clipping issue. I know it may not happen a lot. But, part clipping is like tempting the Kracken. Still could be something else. Have you tried placing the wheels on without clipping them in?

Yes, I acknowledged it was probably a clipping issue in the original post.

Landing gear placement does not seem to have much of a change with this. You can clip the gear deep into the craft or just leave it on the outside and it will still cause the effect when the craft reloads.

I took out all of my mods to double check. Completely stock KSP still has the issue.

I did find something else interesting about this though.

I can take a craft and launch it, retract the gear, and then go to the space center. When I go back to the craft I will get the moving parts issue again. But If I then extend the landing gear on the busted craft, go back to the space center and then back again to the craft to reload it, everything is fine.

Very odd.

Is anyone else having this happen? I would like to hear from others that are observing this so that we can get a better understanding of it and maybe Squad can then take a look at it.
