Which mods for which install?

I've been away from KSP for a while and am getting back into it.  The problem is there are so many different versions of the same mod and so many different installs.  I am trying to run 1.0.4 and can't get proper versions of several mods, like MECHJEB, MECHJEB install for all vehicles, FIRESPITTER, and several others to run.  I keep getting improper version errors what ever mod version I use.

How can I tell or find which mod goes to which install?

Which install has the most useful mods available for it?
