Thanks, but I meant the actual files. 3d models that I could open in 3d modelling software and play around with.

No, not available. They are part of the game that EULA prohibits you to de-compile/de-construct and are not available.
There are approximations made by others for the purposes of modding though.

Oh, ok. So it's not possible or legal. :D

Kinda disappointing, but I guess that makes sense..

Hey, can I ask you one more question?

So the kerbal models aren't allowed, but what about the background images for the various buildings? I don't see how they wouldn't be allowed, I mean they're just images..

Do you know if/how I could get them?

They're also stored in a manner that it's not technically possible for you to obtain without dissecting asset files into McNugget sized pieces and parts which also happens to be the part disallowed under the EULA.

You should repeat that in front of a bunch of professional photographers and see how they react on “they’re just images.” :D  You’d go bankrupt feeding the people that make a living around the litigation of copyright infringement on images.

Context, my friend. Context.

That doesn't make it legal. You can find a lot on Google and not all you find is legal.

Here's an article about a hotel that, after the licensing terms expired, basically thought “stuff it” and continued to use images, that were replicated by the thousands through Google. The damages per photo aren't that much, but boy do you get a lot of infractions that way. I think they're on the hook for something like two million Euro.

Obviously it is doubtful that Squad would ever take that route (especially since the images aren't delivered as licensed products), but the argument "I can find them online" is a particular weak one. Nothing would stop you from creating similar looking original content though!

I am aware of that. I'm not stupid.

I looked into the sources of the images, the first one was released by squad as a sneak peek for career mode, the second one was the header for this website.

Everything Squad has created is their property and should never be used by anyone else for any purpose especially commercial purposes.

as such I would never Google the words "how to extract 3D models from Unity games" and I have no idea what you might find if you do that,

That said, I wouldn't think squad's going to sue anyone for a little bit of fan art.

I have no clue what you're trying to do. But whatever it is, as long as it's personal use, do whatever you please. Rip apart, dissect into "McNugget sized pieces", alter, alter again, transform, combobulate, and discombobulate to your hearts desire. The minute the project becomes publicly shared, disregard everything I just said. Hope you find what you're looking for!

Squad have, and do, generally encourage modding, fanworks, etc. as long as it is non-commercial.  They were, for instance, entirely content about Exploring The System, that I published here and as a freely-downloadable PDF.  As soon as I said the next one would be published on Amazon and would have a fee (because that's the only way I could think of to make a Kindle version) they forbade use not only of their images and models from the game but also any screenshots, etc. that I might take from the game of my own constructions.  They even went so far as to refuse permission to use their or the game's name - to the extent that it was impossible to just say "Kerbal Space Program is the property of Squad" in the accreditations.

Sooo - if whatever you're doing won't cost anyone anything then it's worth asking them, otherwise probably not.  (Which doesn't stop some modders, etc. from asking for donations, so Squad seem to be ok with that too).

  • 1 month later...

This thread, because it skirts the EULA/TOS, will be locked. Extracting art or content from the game is not appropriate discussion for the forums, and the information provided is sufficient that no further comment is really necessary.

All the effective notes have already been made and I think that no more issues are at hand.
