Why does this plane explode?

Recommended Posts

I consider myself a pretty good KSP player having launched to most stellar bodies, and made kraken drives and infinite gliders, but I can't get my head around this plane. Why does it explode on takeoff?

It's killed my Jeb :-/

It's a low tech plane using parts from the first airplane tech node. It likes to veer off to one side at about 50m/s and flip over. Checked for obvious problems, lift is behind center of mass.

The link say " This project is in moderation."

Veering sideways is mostly caused by the landing gear position.

  • The main load bearing landing gear needs to be close to CoM. Just below CoL almost always works well.
  • Nose gear needs to be as far forward as possible.

This just takes me to a link that says "This project is in moderation." Imgur integrates really well with this forum and is so painfree to use. Consider uploading there?

However the general advice for "My plane veers to one side and the things get explody" is to check that the wheels are on straight and not under too much stress. It is also worth checking what mode of symmetry you are using. Make sure that you are placing the wheels in "global" symmetry mode, not "part" symmetry mode (hit the F key to toggle)

How rude, I would also give that plane a good talking to.

I would disagree with the front landing gear as far forward.  It makes taxing very difficult, and if you have stability problems on landing use a drogue chute at touch down to maintain prograde heading.  I also always snap rotate landing gear with the rotation gizmo on absolute to make sure everything is straight.

I never touch friction, usually stiffen spring and dampening though to reduce rocking.
