I'm an idiot- Toolbar

I've just recently started playing KSP.  Great game.   I have just discovered this site and the fact that mods exist for it.  I'm also new, and have no idea how to do these things.

I have an interest in MechJeb.  I see I need a "toolbar" mod.  I also see references to a stock toolbar.  I do not seem to have any sort of toolbar on my screens...do I need to somehow make one appear, or do I need to download a toolbar mod?

Toolbars are a place for mods to put buttons to open menus. The stock toolbar connects to the KSPedia button and will not have any extra buttons on it if you have no mods installed. Before the stock toolbar, though, there was (and is) the toolbar mod:

It has a few different features than the stock toolbar like being able to create a grid and reposition.

Mechjeb doesn't need any toolbar addon. I don't know where you read that. It can use one, but it's optional.

Blizzy's toolbar mentioned by SpaceK531 hasn't properly been updated for the latest version of KSP. I recommend against using it, or any addon that requires it if you're just starting (although it does work). It was really only written because the old default KSP toolbar was so horrible, but Squad has fixed it now, so it's really only for people who have their game already set up that way.
